Tech education debate in RKM@Batu Layar, Lombok, Indonesia

November 19th, 2017 No comments

I had a wonderful evening last week on Indonesia’s Lombok island. A very active local community composed of university lecturers, musicians and artists invited me over as a guest speaker to their regular debate sessions. Initially intended to cover a broader range of topics, our discussion drifted into education, mostly focusing on the future of tech education for children and youth. I spoke about my experience and exchanged opinins with the people gathered in RKM. It was amazing to be part of this lively community for a little while – around there, everybody does something creative all the time, and the people are very knowledgeable. I really hope to come back one day. Special thanks to Latif for arranging all this and Yuga for the great poster.

Medical tech hackathon at Copernicus Science Centre, Poland

August 10th, 2017 No comments

For a second time within a year, I was invited by the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, Poland to run a participatory research hackathon with them. The challenge this time was to improve the ergonomics of an EEG headset for infants. I supported the creation of promotinal materials, invited over a 3D printer filaments company and sourced entire tables full of components, tools and materials to use, including a fully featured resin and silicone casting unit. The event took place on the weekend of 5-6 August, it was a great experience, the participants very creative, and I got some decent street cred, working with the Open Science Foundation for a second, and definitely not last, time. The third hackathon I’ve run so far!

More info on the event here, and a report page is available here (both links in Polish only unfortunately).
